Types
Non-Abrasive Waterjet Cutting
Non-abrasive waterjet cutting is ideal for precisely cutting softer materials such as foam, rubber and textiles. This process pumps water at extremely high pressures through a ruby, sapphire or diamond opening. The water stream moves at a velocity of almost twice the speed of sound, granting exceptional cutting capabilities.
Abrasive Waterjet Cutting
Adding abrasive particles to the stream of water facilitates cutting of very hard and thicker materials, including steel and most metals.
CO2 Laser Cutting
CO2 laser cutting uses an electrically stimulated gas mixture to generate a highly focused beam of infrared light. This beam is directed through a series of mirrors and a focusing lens onto the material surface, melting or vaporizing it with extreme precision. CO2 lasers excel at cutting non-metals and thinner gauge sheet metal, delivering clean edges and intricate detail.
Fiber Laser Cutting
Fiber laser cutting channels light through a fiber optic cable to produce a beam with a much shorter wavelength and higher energy density. This makes fiber lasers especially effective for cutting metals — including steel, aluminum and copper — at faster speeds and greater thicknesses than CO2 systems, with lower operating costs and minimal maintenance.

Laser Cutting vs. Waterjet Cutting: Choosing the Right Process
Laser cutting is a thermal process that uses focused gas laser light to cut flat metal sheets and acrylics, handling materials like steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper and bronze alloys. It achieves tight tolerances down to ±0.002″ on thin gauge materials with a narrow kerf of just .015″, and produces polished edges on stainless and aluminum. However, because it’s a heat-based process, cut edges exhibit a heat affected zone that can cause metallurgical changes — something to factor in when secondary processing is required. Laser cutting is best suited for thinner materials, with a max range of about ½” on stainless steel and ¼” on aluminum.
Waterjet cutting takes a fundamentally different approach, using high-pressure water and abrasive to cut without generating heat. This non-thermal process can handle virtually any material — including metals, stone, glass, marble and composites — at thicknesses up to 12″. Accuracy ranges from ±0.005″ to ±0.030″ depending on thickness, and all materials come out with a sandblasted edge finish. While waterjet is the more versatile option for material range and thickness, laser cutting offers faster speeds and finer detail on thinner metals, making the two processes highly complementary under one roof.

Yes. Precision Advanced Manufacturing is proud to offer the new Dynamic Waterjet technology, and we’re one of only a few facilities in the world with a double-head machine.
